Accelerated Reader Team Standing - November

Which Accelerated Reader team is ahead?  It's hard to tell because the results are so close, but it appears that the Water Team has the edge at this point.

What better time to read a book than over the Thanksgiving holiday?  Come back ready to take a quiz for your team.  Then we will see what the standings look like just before Winter Break!

All students who have participated will be acknowledged in January after the break, so be sure that you are not left out of the fun!

Shadra Strickland Exhibit Not to be Missed

The library is very fortunate to have the opportunity to host an exhibit of the work of Atlanta artist Shadra Strickland, illustrator of a number of children's picture books. Ms. Strickland's work is featured by this year's Ashley Bryan Traveling Exhibit of Illustrated Africana Children's Literature. Featured picture books and accompanying art work include Bird, White Water, A Place Where Hurricanes Happen and Our Children Can Soar.

View the video of Ms. Strickland's Skype vist to our school here.

Please come visit this very special exhibit at the library through December 14.

Wow - It's The Wimpy Kid!

What was the favorite book at this year's book fair? The newest Wimpy Kid book, of course! Here is a photo of Ms. Rembert, the Middle School Librarian, with a handful of copies - hot off the press. Are those middle school students? No, she is surrounded by first graders. Everyone loves The Wimpy Kid!

Book Fair "Out of this World"!

This year's Fall Book Fair was highly successful - in fact the results were out of this world! Students enjoyed the fair, the parent volunteers were fantastic, Scholastic sent lots of interesting books and the library will be able to buy lots of new books with its share of the proceeds. Take a look at one of our wonderful parent volunteers who, in the spirit of the fair, donned her alien antennae - would anyone else like a pair?

Parent Workshop on Multicultural Children's Literature

Library assistant Elke Holzapfel presents examples of typical German children's literature at the recent parent workshop on multicultural children's literature. Library staff members presented French, German, Spanish and English children's literature with a multicultural emphasis. This year for the first time the library's two fall parent workshops, one on the virtual library and the other on multicultural children's literature, were presented in a multilingual fashion with native speakers of all four curricular languages present to answer questions and translate. We hope that this enabled more parents to participate in the workshops.

5K Students Create Me Boxes

Recently the library had on display the "me" boxes created by 5K students in their target language. These boxes, always a perennial display favorite, are the student's visual representation of themselves and their families. Many "favorite things" may be observed in the boxes -- pets, vacation spots, sports. Of course, photos with parents and siblings are the most special mementos of all!

French Immersion Class Works in Library

This year's French Immersion class has been working very closely with library associate Madame Viala to learn and practice library skills in French. Recently Madame Viala has helped the students to use an online research organizer program called Noodletools to prepare for a PowerPoint project on an artist. We hope to display several of the projects as soon as they are finished!
