More Chocolate Covered Insects, Please!

Headmaster Kevin Glass and Head of Upper Primary School Alain Poiraud each enjoyed chocolate covered insects at the assembly following the Thanksgiving meal.  Mr. Glass had promised to try the insects if Book Fair sales this year exceed those of last year and Mr. Poiraud had agreed to eat the bugs if Primary School Book Fair sales exceeded sales attributable to Middle School students.  The students?  Well, they didn't get to try the delectable dish, but they certainly enjoyed watching Mr. Glass and Mr. Poiraud sample the unusual fare!

French Author Joins Students Via Skype for Book Week

A first ever visit by a French author via Skype was thrilling to students and author alike!  Nathalie Brisac of Paris, France, spent an hour conversing with third and fourth grade French students in French about books in her Minusman series.  Madame Brisac even shared a bit of her newest Minusman book which is still in the writing stage.  Hopefully, the French author visit will be an annual event going forward!

One For Books Contributions to Thanksgiving Baskets

The Scholastic One for Books program generated sufficient donations this year to provide many books for the annual Thanksgiving baskets.  Students generously shared their change from Book Fair purchase so that other children could have books as well as a delicious Thanksgiving meal.  What a nice way to put our learner profile into action as students engaged in action that reflected their attitude of caring for others during the holiday season.

Students Enjoy Skype Author Visits

Students in English in second, fourth and fifth grades enjoyed Skype author visits during Book Week in mid-November.  This fourth grade student was asking a question of Kristen Wolden Nitz, author of Defending Irene and Saving the Griffin.  In the library computer lab, students could see an author on the Smartboard and ask questions and interact easily.  The visits and the Fall Book Fair were just some of the activities celebrated by Primary School students during Book Week!

Book Fair Volunteers Were Heroes!

Our book fair volunteers were heroes as usual, helping every student find a good book within their budget and handling every request with a smile.  We appreciate them so much and enjoy seeing many of the same parents year after year.  Thank you for all you do for the students and for the library!

Parent Workshop on Second Language Reading

On October 13, over 15 parents attended a PS Library workshop on second language reading and the library.  Mrs. Hermann shared some current theory about the topic and then some practical ideas about the ways in which parents and the library can work in partnership to help our students become biliterate bilinguals.  Parents then had the opportunity to examine displays of good library materials for second language readers and to explore useful online resources.  Materials from the workshop are posted on the PS Library Moodle.
